Rollover Accident Fatally Injures Man Near Modesto

I’m Ed Smith, a Modesto car accident lawyer. A single vehicle accident occurred north of Modesto during the early morning of Sunday, November 26, 2017. Unfortunately, the accident claimed the life of a Modesto man.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of the man that passed away in this tragic accident.

What Happened?

A 27-year-old Modesto man was driving his 2004 Dodge Durango southbound along Highway 99 in the vicinity of Beckwith Road at around 3:00 pm. For unknown reasons, the vehicle allegedly veered off the roadway and collided with a lighting infrastructure along the right shoulder. The vehicle continued down an embankment, struck a chain link fence and overturned multiple times.

Modesto Man Suffers Fatal Injuries

Emergency personnel was notified of the rollover accident at approximately 3:37 pm. Medical crews were dispatched to the scene where they found the driver of the Dodge Durango several feet from the vehicle. Sadly, the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Identity of Victim Unknown

The identity of the victim has not yet been released due to pending notification of family members.

What is the Most Common Cause of Rollover Accidents?

Rollover accidents tend to occur for a variety of reasons. However, the most common cause of such accidents is vehicle weight distribution. Vehicles with low centers of gravity are less susceptible to rollover accidents as their gravity is closer to the ground than taller and narrower vehicles such as vans, pickup trucks and SUVs. Vehicles with a narrow base and high center of gravity produce more power when conducting turns. This evidently results in reduced vehicle stability, increasing the driver’s risk of being involved in a rollover accident.

Vehicle Design and Rollover Accidents

The common presumption regarding rollover accidents is that they occur as a result of driver error. However, this is not always the case. When investigating this type of collision, there are other critical factors to consider and keep in mind. The design of a vehicle plays a major role in how such accidents are caused. Vehicle manufacturers are expected to design their products to meet safety requirements by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, not all manufacturers abide by these requirements, especially in the roof designs in their produced vehicles. Victims of rollover accidents tend to experience crushed roof injuries as the roof of their vehicle fails to absorb impact and protect occupants inside the cabin from traumatic injuries or even death.
