Rotator Cuff Tear with a Shoulder Dislocation

Rotator Cuff Tear with a Shoulder Dislocation

I’m Ed Smith, a Motorcycle Accident Lawyer in Sacramento. Everyone should take proper safety measures when riding a motorcycle. This means wearing a helmet to protect against head injuries and wearing proper safety gear to guard against road rash. Unfortunately, injuries can still happen with a motorcycle accident. One of the injuries that can occur is a rotator cuff tear. Furthermore, this injury can be accompanied by additional damages as well. One such injury is a shoulder dislocation.

A recent case report was published discussing a severe injury that occurred in a motorcycle accident. A young man was riding along a local road when he suddenly lost control of his bike. His motorcycle ran off the road and struck a ditch. When this happened, he was ejected from the seat and wound up hitting a tree. Fortunately, he was wearing a helmet, which reduces the chance of him sustaining a traumatic brain injury. Nevertheless, the accident was still severe. He realized that he was having significant trouble moving his right arm. Emergency services were called to the scene. He was quickly evaluated and taken to a local hospital.

Treatment of a Serious Shoulder Injury

At the hospital, a detailed physical exam was performed. It was thought that he had suffered some form of shoulder dislocation. He was taken to radiology and received an MRI. Doctors diagnosed him with a posterior shoulder dislocation and a tear of the rotator cuff. To repair this injury, it would require surgery. He was taken to the operating room where the shoulder was placed back in its socket. After this, the torn rotator cuff was repaired. Finally, he required an extensive amount of physical therapy to restore strength in his arm and range of motion to his shoulder.

During an accident such as this, people may wind up missing a significant amount of work. Limitations in the movement of the dominant arm can prevent someone from lifting objects, typing on a computer, or driving a car. Some of the issues that people might encounter include:

  • Large hospital bills.
  • Denied health insurance claims.
  • Unexpected problems with car insurance claims.
  • Possible loss of income due to missed time at work.
  • Tickets related to the accident.
  • Possible court filings and paperwork.
