In the second phase, the jury heard testimonies that made it clear Monsanto knew about the risks associated with Roundup and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The jury also heard convincing evidence that Monsanto failed to warn the public or its consumers. This led to a substantial financial award.
Monsanto: Aware of the Risks
There is substantial evidence that Monsanto was aware of the risks associated with Roundup and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Over three decades Monsanto knew of:
- Five epidemiological studies linking Roundup to cancer.
- Seven animal studies showing risks between Roundup and cancer.
- Fourteen genotoxicity studies that directly tied Roundup to cancer.
During the case, the lawyers argued that, despite knowledge of these studies, Monsanto never conducted its own research and did not warn the public. Furthermore, Monsanto was also accused of publishing its own academic articles to mislead both federal governing bodies and the public as a whole. Therefore, punitive damages against Monsanto were a necessity.
Not the First Victory for the Public
This is only one example of numerous successful lawsuits against the pesticide giant. In August of 2018, another jury in California granted an individual $78 million in a trial that took place in state court. In this case, the man also developed Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma after using Roundup for years during his work as a groundskeeper.
In another case, a couple used about 1,500 gallons of Roundup over 35 years. They stopped using it after seeing commercials saying that Roundup could lead to cancer; however, the damage was done. Both individuals developed Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. For two connected individuals to develop Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is highly unusual.

Overview of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma only constitutes about 4 percent of cancers globally. Therefore, for two people so closely connected to develop the disease, there must be a connecting factor.
