One patient was transported by fire department medics to a hospital with head injuries. An attempt to locate the hit-and-run driver and determine how the crash happened is being conducted by CHP traffic accident investigators.

Head-On Crash Causes Along Rural Highways

A head-on collision is one of the most fatal types of motor vehicle accidents, especially on rural highways. Head-on collisions are more severe than side-swipes or rear-end crashes and can result in more severe injuries and fatalities. The following factors commonly contribute to head-on collisions:

  • Impairment: When impaired drivers are behind the wheel, rural areas are more likely to experience head-on collisions. If a vehicle is coming straight at a driver while impaired, he or she may not be able to react as quickly as they should.
  • Fatigue: Rural highway crashes are often caused by driver fatigue. A fatigued driver is more likely to drift in the lane, resulting in poor decisions and eventually causing a head injury accident.
  • Speeding: Another prevalent cause of accidents on rural highways is speeding. Going too fast limits the driver’s response time to changes on the road or environment, resulting in head-on collisions.
  • Distractions: Despite the dangers of distracted driving on all types of roads, it can be particularly dangerous along rural highways because there are fewer drivers. Drivers can have difficulty focusing on the road and recognizing potential hazards while texting while driving.
  • Tailgating: A driver who follows too closely behind another vehicle may not have the time needed to react quickly when confronted with an unexpected obstacle; tailgating reduces their ability to spot potential hazards and respond accordingly.

The injuries sustained in head-on crashes are often severe and result in hospitalizations, surgeries, and a loss of employment. Injury lawyers can determine how the accident occurred and who is at fault. Medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages can be collected from the other driver if they were responsible.
