Recent data on the Sacramento area deadly crashes presented to the SACOG Board of Directors, comprising elected city and council leaders, showcased that the counties they represent have a much higher rate of fatal and severe injury crashes compared to the state average. With around 1.8 collisions resulting in fatalities for every 100 million vehicle miles traveled in the six-county region, it is evident that road safety remains a pressing issue. By shedding light on the extent of the problem, this interactive map aims to raise awareness and encourage concerted efforts to improve the safety of our roads and protect our communities.

The Sacramento-Roseville-Folsom metropolitan area is facing a grave pedestrian safety crisis with alarming statistics that demand immediate attention. According to a report by Smart Growth America, a nonprofit organization focused on development strategies, the Sacramento area’s deadly crashes rank as the 20th most dangerous place for pedestrians in the entire country. So far this year, there have been 19 pedestrian and cyclist fatalities on city streets this year alone. 

Declaring a State of Emergency Under Consideration

The severity of the situation has reached such a critical level that the city of Sacramento is considering declaring a state of emergency to address the pressing issue of pedestrian and cyclist safety. Urgent action is required to protect the lives of vulnerable road users and create a safer environment for everyone.

Environmental Justice and Pedestrian Safety

In Sacramento, specific neighborhoods, known as environmental justice (EJ) communities, are disproportionately affected by pedestrian injuries and fatalities. These marginalized neighborhoods, including North and South Sacramento, Arden Arcade, and North Highlands, are predominantly home to communities of color that have historically been underinvested. The project manager at Civic Thread, a local transportation advocacy organization, highlighted the urgent need for attention and funding to address these disparities. 

The project manager emphasized the importance of community-rooted strategies and thoughtful design to improve the built environment and prevent unnecessary deaths of innocent individuals who are simply trying to reach their destinations safely. While progress is being made, much work must be done to ensure equitable access to safe and pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods for all residents in Sacramento.
