Sacramento Bicyclist and Pedestrian Crash Statistics

Sacramento Bicycle and Pedestrian Crash Statistics

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Bicycle Accident Attorney. Throughout California, the number of bicycle and pedestrian fatalities has been increasing at a high rate, according to California officials. But why are we seeing these number rise at such an alarming rate?

The recession caused people to start using alternate forms of transportation and this has increased the number of bicyclists and pedestrians on the roadways.

Additionally, some locations in Sacramento are not equipped with some of the newer technology we see downtown.

Dangerous Intersections for Bicyclists and Pedestrians:

The most dangerous intersections for bicyclists and pedestrians are as follows:

  • Intersection of Stockton Boulevard & Fruitridge Road
  • Intersection of 65th Street & Fruitridge Road
  • Intersection of Broadway & Martin Luther King Boulevard
  • Intersection of Watt Avenue & Arden Way
  • Intersection of 47th Street & Franklin Boulevard

The number of fatal crashes involving bicyclists and pedestrians are concerning enough to prompt Sacramento County to join “Vision Zero.” This is a program promoted by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The program aims to reduce the number of fatal accidents as close to zero as possible. They will do this by reducing speed limits, adding safe islands for pedestrian traffic and improving bicycle lanes throughout the city and county of Sacramento.

“Across California, the number of bicycle and pedestrian injuries and fatalities has been growing for the last three to four years to an alarming rate,” according to the California Office of Traffic Safety. Just in the last few years there has been a 3 percent increase in fatal crashes involving bicyclists and pedestrians. The OTS further stated this is higher than the national average.

The video explains that Stockton Boulevard and Fruitridge Road is a very dangerous intersection. It also indicates that not only are motorists driving distracted — but pedestrians are equally distracted while walking.

Sacramento Bicycle and Pedestrian Crash Statistics

  • 2011: 39 pedestrians and bicyclists were killed
  • 2012: 22 pedestrians and bicyclists were killed
  • 2013: 48 pedestrians and bicyclists were killed
  • 2014: 38 pedestrians and bicyclists were killed
  • 2015: 44 pedestrians and bicyclists were killed

That data also indicated that the most dangerous hours for pedestrians is during the nightly commute, 5:00 p.m. through 7:00 p.m.

For bicyclists, the most dangerous time of day is between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

We’ve seen eight fatalities in Sacramento in 2016 and 285 injury collisions.

The California Office of Traffic Safety indicated the number of fatalities is lower this year, mainly, because of the improved economy and lower gasoline prices. This makes it more affordable to drive a car. This means less people walking or riding their bikes. Also, as the days get longer and warmer these numbers could begin to climb.
