Sacramento Bicyclist Struck by Motor Vehicle
I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Bicycle Accident Attorney. Many people use bicycles as a way to commute to work on a daily basis. Others may ride a bicycle as a form of exercise. When people ride a bike, they never expect to be struck by a car; however, that is what happened to one cyclist in Sacramento.
Struck on Elsie Avenue
On June 26, 2017, a cyclist was injured in an accident on Elsie Avenue not far from Power Inn Road. California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the incident shortly after 9 PM. The cyclist appeared to have been struck by a white Honda Civic. When CHP arrived, the cyclist was laying in the road, likely injured, and the vehicle had stuck around to block traffic. It was reported that the cyclist sustained polytrauma from the accident.
Hit and Runs Occur
In this case, the driver of the motor vehicle stayed to help. On the other hand, hit and runs involving a bicycle are too common. Cyclists who have been involved in a hit and run often wonder how they can file a claim for damages when they don’t know who the person is. In addition to a police investigation, it is also helpful to have an experienced attorney who understands how to navigate the legal waters of such a scenario. This allows the cyclist to focus on their recovery while a legal professional handles their case.
Children are Frequently Injured on Bicycles
A significant proportion of cyclists are children playing outside. Unfortunately, children are often injured in bicycle accidents. While some kids fall off of their bike and scrape their arms and legs, kids also fall victim to motor vehicles. Because children are smaller, some people may not see them until it is too late. This can lead to serious injuries, such as pediatric hand and wrist fractures, and significant legal implications. For this reason, everyone should wear a helmet while riding a bicycle, particularly children.
Common Injuries Sustained in Bicycle Accidents
When cyclists are struck by a motor vehicle, they may not have much time to react. This prevents them from bracing for impact. All cyclists should wear helmets to prevent skull fractures from occurring. If a cyclist slams into their handlebars, this can result in severe chest trauma and abdominal trauma. It is also not unusual for cyclists to sustain bone fractures, such as a femur fracture. Everyone who is involved in a bicycle accident should seek prompt medical attention in order to maximize their potential for a successful recovery. Whenever serious injuries are involved in an accident such as a fractured femur, trimalleolar fracture, or wrist fracture, it is important to call an accident lawyer as soon as possible.
