Sacramento Big Rig Crash

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento trucking accident lawyer. A big rig crash involving multiple vehicles proved to me a nightmare for commuters on Tuesday, April 5, 2016.

What Happened?

California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) indicated that all eastbound lanes of Highway 50 in Sacramento had to be shut down to clean up after a terrible crash involving a truck and six cars.

Where Did the Sacramento Big Rig Crash Happen?

The accident happened in the vicinity of 65th Street in Sacramento. Officials said the collision was east of 65th Street and happened around 9:00 a.m. Highway 50 was shut down for a little over two hours.

What Caused the Sacramento Big Rig Crash?

An investigation is underway. No other details have been released. The causes of trucking accidents vary. The braking ability of a large commercial truck sometimes be a factor in accidents. A completely loaded tractor-trailer can take twenty to forty percent longer and/or farther to stop than a standard motor vehicle. This discrepancy can be even larger on wet or icy roadways. That is why it is so important to properly maintain the braking system. Accidents involving large trucks may also happen because of truck driver fatigue. Federal regulations allow truck drivers of large commercial vehicles to drive up to eleven hours at one time and up to seventy-seven hours over a seven-day time period. Unfortunately, many truck drivers abuse these regulations and work much longer. Another area of concern is that often, large commercial trucks on the interstates exceed the allowable weight limits. Other causes of accidents include rollovers,  jackknifing, lack of proper training of drivers and general driver inexperience. Interestingly, truck drivers driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol is not a large contributor to these accidents. The NHTSA reported that only two percent of the drivers of large commercial trucks involved in traffic fatalities had blood alcohol concentrations over 0.08. No matter what the cause of commercial trucking accident, injuries can be severe or even deadly. It’s crucial to have an experienced Sacramento Truck Accident Lawyer assisting you in the event that you or a loved one is involved in a serious trucking accident.
