Hit and Run on State Route 51 Injures One Person

A hit and run resulting in injuries occurred in Sacramento on September 10. The accident happened shortly before 1:00 in the afternoon along southbound State Route 51 just north of the southbound State Route 160 exit ramp. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the suspect in the hit and run was driving recklessly prior to the traffic collision.

Injury Reported in Hit and Run Collision

The driver of the Mazda that was struck was left injured, and the vehicle sustained damage to its front end. A tow truck had to be called to remove the vehicle. As of the time of this report, it had not been released whether the injured individual was treated at the scene and released or transported to a hospital for further care. The CHP is looking for witnesses to the crash, and the investigation is ongoing to locate the fleeing driver

Injuries in a Highway Accident

Vehicles are traveling at higher speeds on a highway than on city streets. This means that injuries from a collision can be more severe. The types of injuries can depend on where the vehicle was struck and whether those inside were using their seat belts and had a vehicle equipped with airbags. Frontal collisions are the most dangerous because head injuries are more likely to occur. In side impacts, head injuries can also occur as well as a heightened risk of spinal cord or back trauma and broken bones.

Hit and Run Collisions

Unfortunately, hit and runs are relatively common these days. The reasons a driver hits and runs are varied. However, they should realize that leaving the scene of an accident without exchanging information can result in high penalties, including fines or even a jail sentence if injuries or fatalities occur. Many hit and runs happen because:

  • the driver is uninsured.
  • the fleeing driver has an outstanding warrant or tickets and doesn’t want to get caught.
  • the motorist is riding in a stolen vehicle or is carrying an illegal weapon or drugs.
  • the driver has been drinking or using drugs.
  • the driver panics and leaves the scene out of fear.

Locating a Hit and Run Driver

My office has an extensive record of successes in locating fleeing drivers. Not only do we work with local authorities, but we can investigate to provide the evidence needed to find that person. Some of the areas that are investigated include:

  • Discovering whether local surveillance cameras captured the hit and run on tape
  • Reviewing the police report for mistakes and interviewing the witnesses
  • Conducting accident reconstruction, which can show the positioning of vehicles, possible fault and other information
  • Seeing whether government negligence in the form of potholes, malfunctioning lights and in other areas could have contributed to or caused the crash

Once the evidence has been gathered, our experienced legal team works to build a case that benefits our client. It may be used for insurance company negotiations or in taking the case to court.

Insurance Coverage Can Pay for Your Injuries

If the hit and run driver cannot be located, your uninsured/underinsured policy will cover the cost of your injuries. Many people have opted to take this policy because of the high number of uninsured drivers around Sacramento. If you don’t carry this optional policy and a household member does, you can place your claim using theirs. It does not raise the rates.
