I-80 On-Ramp Crash Ends up With a Vehicle in Someone’s Yard

A Sacramento driver suffered an injury on September 1 when they lost control of their vehicle in a rollover accident. The accident happened around 1:58 p.m. along westbound I-80 just west of the eastbound Madison Avenue on-ramp. According to the incident report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the Honda Civic crashed into a tree and fence before rolling and ending up upside down in an adjacent yard.

Patient Transported to Hospital With Injuries

A tow truck was called to the scene to right the vehicle and tow it. First responders with the Sacramento Fire Department transported one patient to Kaiser North Sacramento Medical Center with an unknown extent of injuries. The CHP is examining the accident site to determine how the crash happened.

A Rollover Accident Is Among the Most Dangerous

Although a rollover can happen in any vehicle if the circumstances are just right, SUVs, vans and light trucks are most likely to be involved in this type of collision. They often result in serious injuries or fatalities, especially if those inside the vehicle are ejected. Some of the reasons for a rollover accident include:

  • Speeding: The reason there are speed limits is that they are the maximum at which it’s still safe to navigate that particular stretch of road. When a vehicle is struck at high speed, it can cause it to tip over or roll and trap passengers inside.
  • Vehicle defects: Defective brakes, tires or the electronic stability control can lead to a rollover accident. This is one of the reasons it is important to retain a vehicle following a rollover accident. In this way, it can be examined for defects. If it is shown that a defective part caused rollover crash injuries, the manufacturer can be held liable through an auto product liability claim.
  • Drunk driving: The risk of a rollover accident increases when the driver is under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The reason for this is that an impaired driver is more likely to engage in reckless behavior behind the wheel of a car.
  • Losing control of the vehicle: There are a number of reasons a driver can lose control of a vehicle, which include texting or other distractions and drunk or fatigued driving. A driver who is not actively concentrating on the task at hand can clip a curb, run off the road or strike a guardrail, which increases the risk of a rollover.
  • Multiple-vehicle accidents: Accidents that involve multiple vehicles are a common cause of a rollover. One vehicle strikes another, pushing it into a guardrail or oncoming traffic. T-bone accidents in intersections that involve multiple vehicles are another cause.
  • Poor road design or maintenance: Soft shoulders, weak guardrails, unkept roadways, missing signs, potholes, and other problems can lead to a rollover accident. When the government entity in charge of maintenance and design of a roadway is found to be at fault for a rollover accident, they can be held liable for injuries or fatalities. However, the statute of limitations for filing against a government entity is much shorter than for other personal injuries, so enlisting the help of an injury attorney can be a good idea. In this way, paperwork will be completed and sent in a timely manner before the expiration date. Otherwise, the court will refuse to hear the case.
