The accident caused the closure of one lane on the highway as the woman was transported and the scene cleared. Authorities with the CHP traffic accident investigation unit are determining the cause of the collision.
What Causes a Run-Off-Road Accident?
There are many reasons a run-off-road freeway accident can occur. According to the Department of Transportation, run-off-road accidents occur in about 64 percent of single-vehicle collisions. The following are some of them:
- Speeding is probably the number one cause of an accident where a vehicle leaves the roadway. They occur when the driver loses control or tries to overcorrect, especially on a curve.
- Distracted or drunk driving, excess fatigue and other driving errors can cause a roadway departure.
- Cracked, broken pavement, potholes, weakened guardrails and objects in the road can cause a Sacramento freeway accident where the vehicle runs off the roadway. When poor maintenance leads to an accident, the entity in charge may be held liable for injuries. A government claim must be filed within six months, or the court will refuse to hear the case. An accident lawyer can help ensure paperwork is filed in a timely manner.
- Medical issues caused by the wrong medication, dosage or lack of warning to not drive can cause a freeway crash.
- Worn or defective brakes can lead to a roadway departure. An accelerator that sticks, sudden engine shut off and other mechanical problems are also apt to cause a Sacramento freeway accident where the vehicle exits the road. When a defective part causes an accident and resulting injuries, the injured party may file an auto product liability claim to obtain compensation. The manufacturer, part designer and producer as well as others, may be held liable. However, retaining the vehicle so it can be examined by a specialist for defects is necessary.
