Sacramento Major Bicycle Injury – On September 19, 2018, a major bicycle injury occurred at around 5:20 in the morning along Watt Avenue. It involved a bicycle rider who was walking his bike across the road when he was struck by a motor vehicle. The cyclist landed on the car’s hood, and it was reported that the vehicle turned on Potter Lane and proceeded for about a block before the bicycle rider fell off. The driver then fled the scene of the accident without checking on the rider. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the bicyclist suffered severe injuries and was rushed to a local hospital. However, no information on his condition has been released at this time.

Bicycle Accident Injuries
A major bicycle injury can cause high medical bills, time lost from work and psychological and emotional trauma. Some of the most common types of injuries that happen to bicyclists, according to American Family Physician, include:
- Damage to the face: Eye injuries, facial lacerations, broken teeth, and fractures can occur in a bicycle accident. Some injuries may require surgery to repair while others may leave permanent scarring or disfigurement.
- Traumatic brain injury: Because of a bicyclist’s lack of protection in a motor vehicle accident, getting a TBI is a real possibility. While a TBI can be as minor as a concussion, it can also result in bone splinters in the brain, hemorrhage or changes in cognitive function.
- Spinal and back damage: Back and spinal cord damage can leave a bicycle rider with lifelong problems with pain and affect the quality of life. Spinal cord damage is the most serious, which can cause partial or permanent paralysis on one side of the body or from the waist or neck down.
- Broken bones: Simple breaks can be repaired, put in a cast and heal with time. However, some broken bones are complex, requiring surgery to repair.
- Chest injuries: Lacerations and bruising are common but more severe injuries can happen such as broken ribs, punctured lungs or even heart damage.
- Amputation: Fingers, toes, arms or legs can be amputated in a bicycle injury. Not only disfiguring, but these types of injuries can also affect the individual’s ability to do their job and have psychological and emotional repercussions.
- Abdominal trauma: Internal bleeding, bruising, lacerations and organ damage can occur because of this type of injury.
