Sacramento Man Charged with Gross Vehicular Manslaughter

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento Wrongful Death Lawyer. Auto accidents can occur unexpectedly, leading to severe injuries and even fatalities. Recently, the passing of a former Truckee high school football coach following a motor vehicle accident saddened an entire community. A breakthrough was made in the investigation as a local man was arrested in connection with this accident.

Local Man Arrested

A man named David John Slaughter was taken into custody by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) on July 11, 2017. He is believed to be connected to the auto accident that occurred back on April 1, 2017. The suspect was arrested and taken to Nevada City with bail posted at $125,000. The arrest took place in the local Sacramento area, according to a post on a Facebook page of the Quincy section of the California Highway Patrol. The suspect was charged with gross vehicular manslaughter and is being held at the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility.

The Death of a Football Coach

The pickup truck accident that took place back in April resulted in the death of Robert Schaffer, who was a longtime football coach at Truckee High School. He has been remembered by family and friends as a generous, loving, and giving individual who put his players and colleagues ahead of himself. When he passed away, many people stopped to pay their respects with flowers, photos, and memories of the impact he left on all of their lives. He coached at the varsity level for close to two decades, retiring back in 2012. Mr. Shaffer was 64 years of age.

Multiple Injuries

The accident occurred on the evening of April 1 on Highway 89. The suspect’s car is alleged to have crossed from his southbound lane into the northbound lane. This resulted in a head-on collision with Mr. Shaffer’s pickup truck. While Mr. Shaffer passed away at the scene of the crash, his wife and son also sustained minor traumatic injuries. The accident serves as a grave reminder to everyone that collisions can occur at any time, possibly causing a wrongful death.

Safety First

People should remember, particularly when they are driving at night, that attention to the road is paramount. With decreased vision, it is important not to drive while fatigued or drunk. Headlights should be used at all times and people should also watch for pedestrians and animals. Even the smallest of accidents can result in significant injuries or even fatalities that can leave lasting impacts on the community. The memorials at Truckee High School serve as a painful reminder.

We extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of Coach Schaffer for this tragic loss of life.
