Accident on Northbound 51 Near J Street Entrance Ramp
A multiple vehicle collision occurred on S.R. 51 northbound north of the J Street entrance ramp on January 30 at 12:57 p.m. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident involved three vehicles, including a white AT&T van and a Toyota Corolla. A caller said it was a hit and run with the Toyota fleeing the scene. The multiple vehicle collision blocked lanes one and four as well as the off-ramp. Authorities reported that debris was strewn across the middle lanes, and the hood of the fleeing car was lying under the Expo overpass.
More Details About the Multiple Vehicle Collision
Witnesses at the scene said the driver who lost his hood was also throwing cans out of the vehicle’s window. A tow truck was called to remove vehicles to aid in opening the road to traffic. Police reported that a partial license plate was recovered from the Toyota. According to police, injuries resulted from the multiple vehicle collision, but no further information was provided about the third vehicle or the extent of the injuries. An investigation into the traffic accident is underway.
Reasons for a Multiple Vehicle Collision
Heavily trafficked roads are often the site of a multiple vehicle collision. This presents a problem since drivers are unable to get out of the way of an existing crash and its subsequent traffic slowdown. Some reasons that multiple vehicle accidents occur are:
- Speeding: When drivers are speeding at highway speeds, it makes it harder for them to avoid an accident. If they try to swerve out of the way, they are usually unable to control their vehicle.
- Distraction: One of the reasons drivers need to focus on the road ahead is to be aware of what is happening in front of them. In the time it takes to send a text, a car traveling at highway speeds can cover the length of an average football field.
- Tailgating: This is one of the most common reasons a multiple vehicle collision happens. This behavior is reckless and results in a rear-end collision. When this type of accident occurs, one vehicle is often pushed into the one ahead, causing a chain reaction.
When a Fleeing Driver Is Not Apprehended
We work alongside the authorities to find the hit-and-run driver. We use every means at our disposal to do this. In the event the driver is not found, we help our client use underinsured/uninsured insurance to cover medical costs, lost wages and other damages for our clients.
Investigating a Multiple Vehicle Collision
The type of investigation is complicated as the behavior of one driver impacts on the damages the others incur. Our investigators often use accident reconstruction techniques to understand how the auto accident progressed from start to finish. This is crucial in determining liability.
If traffic surveillance cameras are available, our investigators retrieve video footage that shows the accident in real-time. After this, the investigative team talks to witnesses and reviews the police report for inaccuracies. Once all the evidence is compiled, it is given to our legal team to help construct a robust case for our clients.
