Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle on Calvine Road On-Ramp

A pedestrian accident injury occurred in Sacramento on October 10 on one of the on-ramps to State Route 99. The collision occurred around 9:44 p.m. on the eastbound Calvine Road on-ramp to southbound 99 in the Valley Hi area. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the woman was found lying in the roadway.

Investigators Determining Cause of Pedestrian Accident

Both the CHP and officers with the Sacramento Police Department were at the scene. No additional details were provided on whether the pedestrian was taken to a hospital or the extent of injuries. The CHP blocked the on-ramp to determine what happened to cause the accident.

Causes of a Pedestrian Accident Injury

Pedestrians are vulnerable to severe injuries when involved in a crash with a motor vehicle. While people on foot are expected to use caution and obey the rules of the road, they can’t always avoid an accident with a passenger vehicle or truck. Some of the types of negligence that can contribute to a pedestrian accident injury are:

  • Running a red light or stop sign causes many injuries to pedestrians. When the pedestrian is in the crosswalk, they have little opportunity to get out of the way of a vehicle.
  • Making a right-turn without looking for bicyclists or pedestrians: A motorist who is turning right often concentrates on potential traffic from the left. Without looking right also, the driver can end up causing a pedestrian accident injury to someone in the crosswalk or who just stepped off the curb.
  • Making a risky or illegal left turn: Drivers who turn left even though the arrow has changed or continue when traffic is coming can cause a pedestrian accident injury because it is this same time that people walking or riding a bicycle can cross.
  • Backing accidents: Drivers can cause a pedestrian accident when backing out of a driveway or parking space if they don’t check first to see if anyone is behind them.
  • Not slowing down around schools or public areas where people on foot gather: Many accidents involving pedestrians occur near schools, parks, or other areas.

Types of Pedestrian Injuries in an Accident

Although a pedestrian can suffer any injury in a collision involving a motor vehicle, the following are the most common:

  • Injuries to the lower extremities: Because a motor vehicle often strikes an adult in the upper legs in a collision, broken bones such as to the femur or pelvis are common.
  • Head, face, and neck injuries: Injuries to the head, face, and neck commonly occur when the pedestrian lands on the ground or is tossed into the air. In some cases, the pedestrian strikes the vehicle’s windshield, which can result in serious damage such as a broken jaw, traumatic brain injury, or disfigurement of the face.
  • Upper extremities: Upper extremity injuries occur to about 27 percent of the pedestrians involved in a motor vehicle accident. This includes not only injuries to the arms but to the chest area.
