Driver Dies in Sacramento Solo-Vehicle Accident on Stockton Boulevard

A Sacramento solo-vehicle accident recently, cost the life of the driver when his vehicle left the roadway. The accident happened at about 9:55 p.m. along Stockton Boulevard near Florin Road. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said the male driver of a Toyota Tacoma, age 56, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The CHP traffic collision unit is investigating to find out why the accident occurred.

Why Vehicles Leave the Road and Crash in a Sacramento Solo-Vehicle Accident

While driver error is often cited as the primary cause of roadway crashes, several other factors contribute to vehicles leaving the roadway. One significant factor is environmental conditions, such as wet or icy roads, which can drastically reduce traction and increase stopping distances. Poorly maintained roadways, including potholes, debris, or inadequate signage, can also lead to unexpected crashes.

Because a government entity is responsible for roadway maintenance, when the maintenance is under par and leads to a Sacramento solo-vehicle accident, they can be held liable for injuries or fatalities. The time limit to file a government claim in California is six months, so getting help from an accident lawyer may be advisable.

Vehicle-Related Issues Caused by a Defective Part

Additionally, vehicle-related issues, such as tire blowouts or brake failures, can cause drivers to lose control and veer off course. Following a Sacramento solo-vehicle accident, it is important to retain the vehicle so it can be inspected for auto defects. If a defect leads to a fatality collision, the family can institute a product liability lawsuit against the part maker, manufacturer and others.

Compensation Recovery in a Claim for Wrongful Death

In the event of a wrongful death caused by a negligent driver in a Sacramento single-vehicle accident, the family may file a claim to recover various types of damages, including:

  • Loss of income: The deceased person’s wages and benefits are recoverable until their expected retirement age.
  • End-of-life expenses: Families can seek compensation for expenses related to the funeral and other end-of-life costs.
  • Loss of companionship: A surviving spouse may be entitled to compensation for the emotional loss of love, moral support, and companionship provided by the deceased.
  • Support for children: The decedent’s children, who depended on them for financial support, could also claim compensation.
  • Inheritance losses: In some situations, losses related to potential inheritance can be recovered.
  • Household assistance: Compensation may be available for the loss of assistance with household tasks, such as cleaning, cooking, yard work, and tax preparation, which the decedent typically manages. These chores will need to be performed by others, and their costs are recoverable.
