Sacramento Wrong-Way Fatal Crash
I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento car accident lawyer. A severe automobile collision took place along Interstate 5 in Sacramento during the morning hours of Saturday, February 18, 2017. Sadly, the collision caused two occupants in one vehicle to suffer fatal injuries and another driver to suffer traumatic injuries.
What Happened?
Deputies from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department were traveling in the vicinity of El Camino Avenue and Business 80 at about 7:00 am. The deputies observed a red Toyota Sienna and ran the vehicle’s license plate. Authorities later found out that the vehicle was stolen. When the deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop for the vehicle, the driver drove off. This brought deputies on a hot pursuit with the driver.
Driver Causes Wrong Way Crash
The driver of the red Toyota Sienna was allegedly driving recklessly by failing to yield to the deputies’ lights and sirens. The pursuit continued into downtown Sacramento where the driver entered J Street, a one-way street, in the opposite direction. The officers were left with no choice but to end the pursuit due to safety concerns. The Toyota Sienna then entered Interstate 5 by using the J Street off ramp. For unknown reasons, the motorist was driving northbound along the southbound lanes of Interstate 5. An oncoming driver of a box truck was unable to avoid the Toyota Sienna, which resulted in a severe wrong-way crash at approximately 8:07 am.
Were There Injuries?
The driver of the box truck suffered traumatic injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, the two men that were riding in the red Toyota Sienna suffered fatal injuries. The two men were pronounced deceased at the scene by authorities.

Wrong-Way Car Accidents and Caltrans
A wrong-way accident is a type of car accident where a driver operates their motor vehicle in the opposite direction against traffic flow. This type of accident is becoming common in Sacramento and has even caught the attention of Caltrans. Caltrans has recently announced that they will be using Sacramento as a testing ground as an effort to stop wrong-way drivers in the city and throughout California.
