Gather for the Super Bowl Safely

The Super Bowl is this weekend, and whether you are a big football fan or not, the occasion is always a good excuse to meet up with friends, usually over a large spread of food and drinks.  Of course, this year, we are still dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and related recommendations from local health departments and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).  The weather forecast for Sunday is sunny and mid-60’s, so a small outdoor gathering is a safe alternative option.  Here are some suggestions for your fresh air Super Bowl celebration.

Viewing the Game

There are several ways in which the game can be brought outdoors.  Since there is no rain in the forecast, simply moving your TV outside is one option.  Or, if you have a good quality projector and a shady area, you can project the game onto a blank outdoor wall.  You could also stream the game to various devices placed throughout your outdoor area.

Dealing with the Chill

Although the forecast looks pretty great for your pre-game party, the actual event doesn’t kick off until 3:30 p.m.  It is still early February, so there is no doubt it will get quite chilly before the end of the game.  Have your guests dress in layers and stock your patio or outdoor area with an assortment of fleece blankets and throws to help everyone stay warm and comfortable until the final score.

Skip the Charcuterie

A traditional Super Bowl gathering usually includes trays of finger foods – charcuterie boards, chips and dips, and crackers and cheese for example.  This year it is wise to find other options to eliminate communal touching and sharing of food.  Trays of shareable appetizers bring us all a little bit too close when we are still trying to stay socially distant.  There are many other ways to enjoy safe party snacks.

Personalized Super Bowl Snacks

Even though huge platters of shared chips and dips are off the menu, that doesn’t mean that the Super Bowl favorite has to be altogether sidelined.  Since your gathering will be smaller than usual anyway, prepare individual portions.  Purchase many smaller snack-sized bags of chips so that each person can have their own, then spoon out individual portions of dip into small paper cups.

Use your Grill

Since you will be outdoors, it’s the perfect chance to have an early season BBQ.  Burgers and hot dogs are traditional sporting event cuisine.  With regard to all the fixings, avoid passing around jars and bottles – use this opportunity to set out all the individual packets of ketchup and mustard you store in your fridge.  If you aren’t a condiment hoarder, you can also grab a packet of small paper serving cups at the grocery store and fill them with individual portions of toppings and condiments.  Use disposable plates and cutlery.

Safety First

Be clear with your guests in advance that you will be implementing social distancing protocols with regard to space, fresh air, and not sharing food.  Designate a bathroom for guest use and stock it with paper towels to dry hands after washing.  Set out bottles of hand sanitizer throughout the gathering space.

If you will be on the roads on Super Bowl Sundays, be aware that for the past decade, more auto accidents occur on that day than on any other Sunday during the first two months of the year, combined.  Remember that in football and in safe driving, the best offense is a good defense!
