Santa Barbara Plane Crash Under Investigation
I’m Ed Smith, a Santa Barbara personal injury lawyer. A light plane crashed northeast of the city of Santa Barbara in a wilderness area at Los Padres. The accident is under investigation by authorities as to the cause.
What Happened?
Authorities were notified at about 2:30 in the afternoon after the plane crashed close to Jameson Lake near Carpinteria. The pilot of the plane, age 31, was rescued from the remote location after being hoisted by the crew of a helicopter from the plane wreckage, according to the Sheriff’s Office for Santa Barbara County. The pilot of the plane was found to be the sole occupant on-board at the time of the accident. Officials from the Santa Barbara Fire Department reported that his legs were fractured during the impact.
Private Plane Safety
According to Earl Weener, a National Transportation Safety Board member and expert in aviation, safety in commercial airlines has increased by 80 percent over the past decade. However, safety in general aviation has remained flat. In 2013, there were 1,297 general aviation accidents with 387 fatalities. Compared with the number of motor vehicle accidents each year, this might seem like a small number until you compare the number of motor vehicles versus the number of light planes.
Reasons for Light Plane Accidents
Although about 50 percent of accidents in light planes can be attributed to pilot error, other reasons can come into play. Mechanical errors, such as a defective part or defective part design can contribute or cause an accident. This is in addition to errors by air traffic control personnel, maintenance that has not been performed or poorly performed and errors by other personnel on the ground.
Recovering Damages After an Airplane Crash
When an accident occurs, it is investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration. However, consulting an airplane crash attorney experienced in dealing with the complexities of proving that negligence caused a crash can help the injured person recover damages. In a worst case scenario, it may help the family recover damages through a wrongful death lawsuit.
