Santa Barbara Pumper Truck Semi Crash

I’m Ed Smith, a Santa Barbara car accident lawyer.  A crash between a pumper truck and semi on May 30 in Santa Barbara caused a spill of liquid near Santa Maria. Traffic on the road remained limited while health department officials determined whether the liquid was dangerous and the roadway was cleared.

What Happened

The accident happened along Foxen Canyon Road before 7:30 in the morning when a pumper truck crossed the centerline and collided with the semi. The driver of the semi reportedly attempted to avoid colliding with the other truck but could not, according to witnesses to the accident. Because of the accident, liquid spilled from the pumper truck.

Health Officials Asked to Determine Danger of the Spilled Liquid

It was ascertained that the truck was carrying a disinfectant liquid used in port-a-potties. The health department of Santa Barbara concluded that the disinfectant posed no danger. At the time of the crash, the semi was hauling 39 tons of cement. This made it hard to remove the truck from the crash site. The pumper truck driver suffered minor injuries as a result of the accident.

Roadway Spills

When an accident occurs between two vehicles, it can cause a chain-reaction crash that injures many. The danger may be compounded when spillage occurs, as happened in the accident above. Truck accidents are particularly dangerous. Truck drivers are responsible for driving safely on the road, and if employed by a company, the company can also be held liable if an accident occurs. Reckless driving and distracted driving are common causes and both are attributed to driver error.

Crash Statistics

The latest statistics from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration showed 4,311 fatalities caused by accidents with either big trucks or buses in 2015. This was an 8-percent increase over the previous year. The number of trucks involved in crashes that resulted in fatalities also increased by 8 percent. The number of injuries increased by 62 percent from the years 2009 to 2015.

Police reports nationwide showed approximately 415,000 crashes that involved large trucks. One-percent of those accidents resulted in fatalities, and 20 percent resulted in injuries. The statistics show a high number of those crashes were with another motor vehicle at 64 percent. When injured by an accident with a large truck or spilled contents from a truck, a personal injury attorney may be able to help by recovering fair compensation for your injuries.
