Developing Scoliosis from an Auto Accident
Cars are dangerous and can result in fatalities in the event of a car accident. For those who have been involved in a severe car crash and survive, they could wind up with serious, permanent complications as a result of their injuries. Sometimes, these injuries can involve the spinal cord which can lead to serious quality of life issues.
Spinal Cord Issues Following a Car Accident
The spine is one of the most critical parts of the body. It is made up of a few dozen bony vertebrae that protect the nerves of the spinal cord. These nerves exit the spinal cord and travel to all of the cells of the body. These nerves power the motor functions of the limbs and transmit sensory signals back from these limbs to the brain. If someone is involved in a car accident, he or she could sustain injuries of the spine. A few examples of these injuries include:
- A herniated disc, also known as a slipped disc.
- Chronic pain stemming from nerve damage.
- Bending of the spine, called scoliosis.
Sometimes, these issues are not always evident right after the accident. Scoliosis can take some time to develop.
Treatment Options for Scoliosis
A direct impact to the spine can lead to gradual degeneration of the tissue in and around the spinal cord. As this tissue degenerates, the spine could bend to the left or the right. This abnormal, lateral curvature of the spine is called scoliosis. This abnormal bend can lead to mobility problems, arthritis, and even damage to internal organs. In some cases, scoliosis can be corrected with surgery. This is typically performed by a trained orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon. The recovery process following this surgery can be long and often requires physical therapy.
