Semi Collides With Sedan

I’m Ed Smith, a Rancho Cordova truck accident lawyer. On August 13, a semi was involved in a collision with a small sedan along westbound U.S. Route 50 in the early afternoon. Unknown injuries were reported as a result of the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), and Metro Fire personnel were called in to evaluate the condition of those who were injured. It is unknown at this time whether those injured in the accident were treated at the scene or taken to a hospital for further care.

Details of the Accident

The crash occurred shortly before 2:00 in the afternoon just west of the Hazel Avenue off-ramp. It was reported that the semi caused the accident by crashing into a Hyundai Elantra for unknown reasons. The CHP reported that the HOV and number one lanes were initially blocked. Although the semi was pulled to the right-hand side of the road, the sedan remained in the number one lane for some time and was not movable. Sac Fire was called to attend to possible injuries to juveniles riding in the sedan. The accident is being investigated by authorities with the CHP as to cause.

Incidence of Truck Accidents

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 4,000 people died in collisions with large trucks in 2016. Of that number, 72 percent were those riding in other vehicles, 17 percent were drivers of the big trucks, and the rest were pedestrians, bicyclists and the like. Common characteristics of the crashes resulting in fatalities were as follows:

  • 28 percent of large truck accidents that resulted in fatalities happened on interstate roads.
  • 62 percent of accidents with big trucks that resulted in deaths happened in rural areas.
  • 5 percent of fatalities from collisions with large trucks happened in construction zones.
  • 79 percent of the deaths caused by large trucks happened on a weekday.

Reasons for Accidents Caused by Big Trucks

About 87 percent of collisions that are caused by large trucks is because of driver error. When an accident happens, because of the much larger size and weight of a big truck, it can leave those in the other vehicles with serious injuries or result in the loss of a loved one. Because a truck accident is much more complex than a collision between motor vehicles, it is important for an injured person to speak to an experienced truck accident lawyer. The lawyer can examine the facts in the case, including examination of driving logs and other important evidence, to determine fault and build a strong case for fair compensation. Some of the reasons for accidents caused by large trucks include:
