SUV and Semi Collide on State Route 99
A semi collision happened in Sacramento on January 26 when it collided with an SUV on the highway. The accident was reported around 8:00 in the morning along northbound State Route 99 just south of the eastbound 47th Avenue off-ramp. A GMC Terrain was involved, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) incident report. Both vehicles pulled over to the right-hand side of the roadway.
Additional Information About the Semi Collision
Although the SUV was damaged enough that it could not be moved, no information was released about possible injuries. An investigation into the cause of the semi collision is being conducted by the CHP to discover how it happened.
Dangers of a Semi Collision
Anytime a motor vehicle collides with a semi, serious injuries and fatalities can be the result. Because a big rig is much larger and heavier, a smaller vehicle can pass underneath it in an underride accident, or the semi can go over it. In addition, semis are prone to jackknifing, where the trailer begins to go at a higher speed than the tractor and slides around sideways. Other problems encountered with big rigs that can result in a semi collision include:
- A big rig needs a lot of space to turn a corner: Semis often have to go out of their lane to make a turn. This can cause a semi collision when they strike other vehicles in the next lane.
- Big rigs have enormous blind spots: Many motorists don’t realize that even though a trucker sits up high, their field of vision is limited, especially on the sides of the trailer. Pacing a big rig instead of passing quickly can cause a semi collision if the trucker doesn’t realize the smaller vehicle is there.
- It takes longer for a big rig to stop: Cutting off a big rig or stopping suddenly in front of one can lead to disaster. Anything that weighs up to 80,000 pounds needs more stopping space, so a semi collision with the smaller vehicle would not be surprising.
Why You Need Legal Advice After a Semi Collision
A collision with a semi can result in devastating injuries to the occupants of a passenger vehicle. To address the financial harm the individuals are facing, it is best to have the legal insight an injury lawyer can provide. Aside from constructing a strong case against the at-fault driver, a law firm must investigate the accident thoroughly.
When a truck is involved, this means that the investigation delves into the care and maintenance of the truck, the driver’s background and training. They also review the company’s diligence in checking for part defects as well as adhering to federal and state regulations. Without doing this, the case will lack the evidence needed for a successful resolution. Our injury attorneys use this information to help our clients obtain the compensation they deserve.
