Septum Rupture Injuries —A car accident can happen at any time, and some injuries that people suffer in a collision could end up being fatal. Mechanism: Ruptured Septum
The role of the septum is to divide the nasal passages and provide a smooth portal through which air can enter the nose. There are two different ways that someone could sustain a rupture of their septum. Sometimes, the septum is deformed at birth. Other times, the septum is damaged through direct trauma in a car accident. This often occurs when people strike their head on the dashboard or steering wheel. Some of the symptoms include:
- Severe pain
- Bleeding from the injury site
- The feeling of congestion on one or both sides of the nose
If not corrected quickly, there are significant complications that might develop.
Complications and Treatment Options
Someone who has sustained a rupture of their nasal septum is at risk of suffering a handful of different difficulties. These include:
- Frequent, voluminous nosebleeds that are difficult to stop.
- Insomnia, or difficulty sleeping, that comes from snoring at night.
- Difficulty breathing, particularly when an upper respiratory infection is present.
- Recurrent infections due to difficulty clearing cold and flu-like symptoms.
When people have sustained a rupture of their septum, the treatment is surgery. A trained surgeon will repair the broken septum and ensure that the bridge is placed back in its proper alignment. It will take several weeks for the bone to heal. Then, people should be able to breathe easily once again.
