Highway 99 Accident May Have Been Caused by Racing Drivers
A serious injury occurred to a pregnant woman in Modesto on March 14. The pregnant woman, 25, was driving a Chevy Traverse with her baby and minor child when the accident happened, according to the report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The accident happened around 4:00 in the afternoon along northbound Highway 99 near Crows Landing and Zeff roads.
Witnesses Reported Two Drivers Traveling at High Speeds
Witnesses to the collision told CHP traffic officers that two drivers, one in a BMW sedan and the other in an Infiniti, caused the accident. They reportedly were racing at speeds of more than 100 mph and switching lanes back and forth when they came upon three vehicles. The Chevy Traverse was traveling in the fast lane, with a Toyota Camry riding in the middle lane, and in the right lane was a Nissan sedan.
Drivers Tried to Speed Through Other Cars Sharing the Roadway
The 25-year-old driver of the Infiniti, a Turlock resident, tried to make room to pass between two of the lanes where the Nissan and Toyota were traveling. Both of the cars were struck. The driver of the Camry, a Modesto resident, age 27, lost control of the vehicle and veered into the fast lane, striking the Traverse holding the pregnant woman and children.
Vehicle Carrying Pregnant Woman and Children Exited the Road
As a result, the Traverse hit the concrete wall in the center and careened across the northbound traffic lanes, exited the highway, and rolled a number of times before ending up on Zeff Road. The Camry and Infiniti stopped on the right-hand shoulder, and the Nissan ended up in the middle lane.
Pregnant Woman Suffers Serious Injury in Collision
The Traverse driver, Edith Amezcua, age 25, and a Merced resident, suffered a broken arm, ribs, and cervical fracture in the collision. Her infant son had a small laceration on his head, and the minor child was unharmed. However, in addition to the mother, both children were transported to a hospital as a precautionary measure.
Mother’s Caution May Have Protected Her Unborn Baby From Serious Injury
The mother and her children were all wearing seat belts at the time of the collision. According to Officer Ted Olsen, a spokesperson with the Modesto office of the CHP, wearing a seat belt may have saved the unborn child from suffering any injuries.
Serious Injury Accident Investigation Being Conducted
The driver of the Infiniti remained at the scene and complained of pain but apparently had no serious injury and refused transport to a hospital. It was discovered he had not been using drugs or alcohol at the time of the multi-vehicle crash. The BMW driver fled from the scene. No arrests have been made in the incident, although an investigation is still ongoing.
