Injuries Occur in Solo-Vehicle Crash Along Florin Road

A single-vehicle accident was reported in Sacramento on August 3 when a car struck a tree in front of a church. The crash happened around 8:11 in the morning along Florin Road between Kara Drive and Power Inn Road. According to the report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), family members arrived as well as first responders with the Sacramento Fire Department, who were there to assess injuries. Two patients were transported to Kaiser Permanente for additional evaluation and treatment of their injuries.

Incidence of a Single-Vehicle Accident

Single vehicle accidents occur frequently and can result in serious injuries. Across the nation, 55 percent of fatal accidents are those involving a solo vehicle. They happen most often on rural roads due to run-off-road crashes. By comparison, fewer solo vehicle crashes occur in urban areas. Run-off road accidents usually involve hitting a guardrail, tree, a parked car, an animal or a median. Rollovers are also observed. However, the incidence of rollovers is less than 3 percent. Pedestrians or cyclists can be hurt in a solo crash where the vehicle leaves the road.

Causes of Solo-Vehicle Crashes

Some of the more prominent causes of single-vehicle accidents are:

  • Distracted driving: Taking your eyes off the road, even for a few seconds, is enough to cause a single-vehicle accident. Driving distracted is becoming a major cause of roadway accidents in the country. It occurs when the driver is texting or otherwise using a cell phone, adjusting the radio or setting a GPS unit.
  • Speeding: This driver behavior leads to many accidents since it causes the driver to lose control of their vehicle. It is defined as driving faster than the speed limit or for roadway conditions, including inclement weather. Speeding is a component of different varieties of crashes. For instance, while rollovers are not common in run-off-road accidents, 85 percent of all rollovers that do happen in a single-vehicle accident involve speeding.
  • Drunk driving: Driving while inebriated is a major reason for car accidents, including single-vehicle crashes. Studies have shown that a drunk driver is 30 percent more likely to have a solo-vehicle crash.
  • Auto defects: Losing the ability to brake or suddenly realizing the accelerator is stuck are examples of scenarios drivers face occasionally. They are usually due to auto defects or lack of maintenance in most cases. When an auto defect causes a single-vehicle crash, it is possible to place a product liability lawsuit against the manufacturer.
  • Fatigued driving: Driving while tired is another problem associated with not maintaining focus on the road. Even closing your eyes for a few seconds can lead to a single-vehicle crash. Driving fatigued is rapidly becoming a major cause of roadway accidents, including solo-vehicle crashes.
  • Deer or other animal crossings: At night or on a poorly lit road, it is difficult to see an animal crossing the road. As the driver swerves to avoid hitting the animal, a run-off road accident can occur. Hitting the animal can also cause significant vehicle damage and injuries.

Liability in a Single-Vehicle Accident

Determining liability in a single-vehicle accident is complicated. If the driver is seriously injured or dies, it is difficult to determine what happened. For example, in some cases, another car ran the vehicle off the road and fled the scene. Manufacturer defects should also be considered. That is why it is important to preserve the vehicle after the crash. All too often, the vehicle is destroyed before it is examined. Our law firm asks that the vehicle be preserved and sends our investigators to examine it.
