Single Vehicle Crash on I-5 Kills Sacramento Resident

I’m Ed Smith, a Sacramento car accident lawyer. A September 2 crash in Sacramento on North Interstate 5 just south of Corning Road took the life of a city resident in what is described as a fiery crash.

Details of the Accident

The resident, a woman age 33, was a passenger in the vehicle. According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver, Pao Her, a 32-year-old, was at the wheel of a Toyota Camry traveling northbound at approximately 70 mph, which is slightly above the posted 65 mph limit, when his vehicle left the road, according to several witnesses at the scene of the accident. The vehicle hit a small obstacle, went down an embankment and hit a tree with the front end of his Toyota. After the impact, a fire ensued, engulfing the motor vehicle and spreading to surrounding vegetation and trees.

The driver removed himself from the car but a female passenger was not able to escape. The woman’s identity has not been released as of the time of this reporting.

Accident Injuries

The driver suffered minor injuries for which he was provided treatment at St. Elizabeth, a Red Bluff community hospital. The injuries, according to the CHP, were minor. The Sacramento resident remained in the vehicle, and a news release said she died at the accident site.

Investigation of the Accident

The CHP is investigating the accident to determine why the driver left the highway. According to reports, there was no reason to believe drugs or alcohol was involved. Authorities are asking for the public’s cooperation and urge anyone with more information to contact their Red Bluff office.

Single Vehicle Crashes

Single vehicle collisions are, as their name suggests, ones that involve only one vehicle and are classified as run-off road and on-road accidents. In California, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that single vehicle crashes account for roughly 57 percent of all crashes. On-road collisions typically can involve a rollover crash, an impact with a roadway divider or debris on the road. On-road crashes may also involve a bicyclist, pedestrian, animal or collision with a train. Off-road crashes account for 70 percent of fatal roadway crashes, according to statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Run-Off Road Accident Characteristics

There are reasons run-off road crashes happen. Among the most common are:

Drunk Driving: A driver who has consumed alcohol is 86 percent more likely to be involved in a ROR collision.
Speed: Among drivers who were involved in a ROR accident, 90 percent were traveling above the speed limit.
Curved roads: Such roads are often the scene of ROR accidents, and of all crashes that happened on a curved road, over 90 percent were ROR.
Rural roads: Rural roads are often the site of ROR accidents by a factor of 80.6 percent.
Divided Roadways: Divided roads had fewer crashes than those without a divider by a ratio of 76 to 67 percent.
Adverse weather conditions: Adverse weather such as rain, snow or sleet was more likely to end in a ROR accident by 75 percent.
