South Lake Tahoe Multi-Vehicle Accident
I’m Ed Smith, a South Lake Tahoe personal injury lawyer. A series of auto accidents that sent multiple people to the hospital occurred in South Lake Tahoe on State Route 88 in the early afternoon hours of Tuesday, February 14, 2017.
What Happened?
Officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to a series of accidents that occurred on State Route 88 east of the Kirkwood Inn around 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.
The first collision involved a vehicle carrying 5 passengers. For unknown reasons, the driver lost control of her vehicle and crashed into an embankment. While the driver was checking on her passengers a pick-up truck that was traveling westbound struck her disabled vehicle.
Shortly after the initial collision a motorist who was traveling towards the disabled vehicles veered their vehicle to the right in an effort to avoid the collision site and lost control of their vehicle and struck a nearby snow bank.
Lastly, in the series of collisions, another driver was traveling southbound on State Route 88 towards the scene of the earlier occurring accidents when the driver also veered his vehicle right to avoid the accidents; the driver lost traction and hit one of the already disabled vehicles.
Were There Injuries?
Yes, according to reports released by the CHP eight people suffered minor to major injuries in the accidents. 7 people were transferred to nearby hospitals by ambulance, and one minor child was urgently transported by helicopter flight crew to a nearby hospital for treatment and evaluation of his or her traumatic injuries.
Investigation and Road Closures
This series of accidents is currently being investigated by the CHP. At this time it is not known if speed, distracted driving, or driving under the influence could have been factors in any of the above-mentioned accidents. State Route 88 was closed to through traffic for a short period of time while paramedics and flight crews worked to remove the injured passengers from the scene. All four vehicles sustained major damage and had to be towed from the scene.
