South Lake Tahoe Pedestrian Accident

On Sunday, December 10, 2016, a pedestrian running across Highway 50 was struck by a car and killed near the Town and Country Center in South Lake Tahoe.

At the scene

Responding to the scene, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue had the male pedestrian transported to the hospital. Sadly, he later died after undergoing surgery at Barton Memorial Hospital. The identity of the 32-year-old man is being withheld until next of kin can be notified.

What happened and where?

The victim from the Town and Country Center area was hit while crossing outside the pedestrian crossing area 100 yards from the Carson Avenue and Lake Tahoe Boulevard traffic light. The driver of the car, a San Jose resident, was in the slow lane going west at about 35-40 miles per hour. Neither the driver of the car nor his passenger were hurt.

Under the influence?

Drugs and alcohol are not believed to have been a factor as far as the driver is concerned, and we will not know until an autopsy is completed if the pedestrian was under the influence. Another pedestrian accident happened in the same area in November.

Who Was at Fault?

It is too early to know for sure. A traffic collision report is usually prepared within one or two weeks following an accident. Sometimes, these reports are inconclusive or may contain errors as to fault. This can leave the family members of an individual who has passed away with several unanswered questions. It is essential to have an experienced personal injury lawyer investigate the sequence of events leading up to a pedestrian accident to properly determine liability. If a driver was found to be negligent in the accident, an attorney can help you recover compensation for the wrongful death of your loved one.

What to do after an accident:

  • Stay at the scene.
  • Ensure the other people involved are not injured; if so, call 911; otherwise, call the police department.
  • Use your cell phone to take pictures of the other driver’s information. This includes;
  • Obtain their driver’s license information
  • Insurance information
  • License plate number
  • Also, take photos of the vehicle damage
  • If there are witnesses, get their names and phone numbers
  • Contact an attorney if you or someone in your vehicle is seriously injured before you call your own insurance company.
