Intersection Accidents
Accidents at intersections are some of the most frequent crashes that occur. According to the Federal Highway Administration, approximately 2.5 million such accidents happen each year. Of all car accidents, intersection crashes make up about 40 percent of these collisions. This frequency can lead to serious and often fatal injuries in a South Sacramento injury accident. Because of this, motorists are cautioned to exert great care at intersections, particularly when making a left turn.
Common Causes of Intersection Accidents
There are common reasons intersection accidents happen.
- High traffic flow: The more traffic you have passing through an intersection, the more likely a serious accident will occur. Busy intersections can have up to eight lanes converging with heavy traffic making it a dangerous place for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists alike.
- Poor signage: When signs to guide motorists and others through an intersection are absent or are hidden by trees or other foliage, the incidence of intersection accidents increases.
- Hampered visibility: The design of an intersection and its placement can be a problem in some cases. For instance, the terrain may be hilly, and motorists or others may not have enough time to slow down or see someone in the intersection. Structures near the intersection may hide the crossroads, leading to a South Sacramento injury accident.
- Cautionary elements for left turns: Since motorists making a left turn are most commonly involved in an intersection accident, the use of traffic lights or other precautionary methods should be implemented to avoid serious accident injuries.
- Speeding: Traveling at a higher rate of speed through an intersection, even if the driver has the right of way, can mean that the motorist is ill-prepared to stop in time if another vehicle, cyclist or pedestrian enters the intersection. Slowing down when approaching crossroads will prevent such collisions.
- Running a red light: Drivers are often in a hurry and illegally go through an intersection on a red light. Unfortunately, other motorists depend on drivers obeying the rules of the road. This reckless behavior can lead to a serious injury accident.
- Yellow lights mean to slow down: Some drivers use a yellow light as a warning to speed up before it turns red. Doing this often leads to a collision.
- Drunk driving: Drunk drivers lose their cognitive ability and judgment. This leads to intersection accidents and fatal collisions.
- Road rage: Road rage incidents are increasing in California. A hallmark of this type of behavior is disregarding the rules of the road, which can include being impatient at an intersection and proceeding out of turn. It is best to allow an aggressive driver to have his or her own way.
- Distracted driving: Motorists whose focus is on selecting a radio station, monitoring GPS or texting can result in an intersection crash. This occurs when many drivers are not attentive to signage indicating that an intersection is ahead.
