One Person Transported to Hospital Following On-Ramp Collision

An on-ramp collision in South Sacramento injured one person on June 17 when two vehicles crashed into each other. According to the incident report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident happened on the West Mack Road on-ramp heading toward northbound SR 99 around 9:22 in the morning. Both of the vehicles involved in the crash, a Subaru Impreza and Nissan SUV, ended up on the right-hand side of the on-ramp.

Accident Investigation Ongoing to Determine Cause of On-Ramp Collision

One person was transported to Kaiser South Sacramento Medical Center with undescribed injuries. An investigation into the cause of the on-ramp collision is ongoing by the CHP to find out what happened.

Reasons for an On-Ramp Collision

Countless vehicles travel on Sacramento’s highways every day and accidents often occur. However, accidents on an on-ramp or exit-ramp represent the highest number of crashes associated with highway travel. Some of the causes of a ramp collision include:

  • Speeding: Speeding on an on-ramp can easily result in an accident, especially since vehicles are going slower because they are preparing to to merge with highway traffic.
  • Distracted driving: A driver who is entering an on-ramp and talking on a cell phone or texting at the same time becomes a danger to other drivers. Although only hands-free telephone use is allowed in California, some drivers still ignore it and pick up their phones.
  • Poor ramp design: A poorly designed ramp that has curves that are too sharp or lanes that are too narrow can lead to an accident. In this case, the ramp designer may be held liable through the government entity that approved it.
  • Changing lanes while exiting or entering a highway ramp: Most drivers plan ahead so that they are in the correct lane when they enter a ramp. However, those unfamiliar with the area highway system or who aren’t paying attention may attempt to move over, leading to an on-ramp collision.
  • Drunk drivers: Drunk drivers cause many accidents, especially on highway ramps. Although inebriated drivers are heavily responsible for causing head-on collisions for entering an exit ramp going in the wrong direction, they can also cause accidents at on-ramps. This happens because a drunk driver weaves in and out of their lane, cannot judge distances from the other vehicles and for other reasons.
  • Auto defects: A tire that suddenly blows out, brakes that fail or a steering wheel that locks can end up causing an on-ramp collision. In the event an auto defect causes an accident injury, a product liability claim may be placed against the manufacturer and others.

Investigation of an On-Ramp Collision

Whether they are entrance or exit ramps, ramp accidents require gathering evidence to support a client’s compensation claim. Our investigators begin by examining the police report for mistakes and taking statements from any witnesses to the accident. They continue by performing forensic reconstruction and look for any surveillance cameras in the area that might have captured the accident on tape.

The ramp area itself is examined by engineers to determine if poor design or problems were present that would have contributed to an accident. Once all the information is gathered, our injury attorneys go to work to use the evidence in building a strong case that supports our client’s claim for compensation.
