Hit and Run in South Sacramento Pedestrian Death

Hit and Run in South Sacramento Pedestrian Death

I’m Ed Smith, a South Sacramento car accident lawyer. A pedestrian death occurred last Thursday night, on May 11, 2017, when a 35-year-old woman was hit and killed while trying to cross Franklin Boulevard near 42nd avenue. The vehicle fled the scene following the accident.

My heart and prayers go out to all family and friends of the woman who lost her life in this tragic hit and run collision.

What Happened?

California Highway Patrol was sent to Franklin Boulevard on Thursday night responding to a report about someone lying in the road. It appears that an unknown vehicle, heading south on Franklin Boulevard, struck 35-year old Alysha McLean just before 10:50 pm. McLean was attempting to cross the street near 42nd avenue when she was hit. According to CHP, she passed away at the scene. Authorities are still looking for any available information.

Pedestrian Death Statistics

According to the GHSA, there are four states that make up over 41% of the entire number of pedestrian traffic fatalities in the United States. These four states are California, Florida, New York, and Texas. By contrast, these same states include only a third of the total population in the United States. In 2015, California was in the top 15 states with the most pedestrian fatalities per capita with a rate of .89 per 100,000 people.

Combatting Pedestrian Death

Each state is pushing to combat pedestrian deaths in different ways while continuing to encourage walking and public transportation. To address this concern, California is focusing on the enforcement of traffic laws, making information widely available to the public, educational outreach, analyzing data, locating areas with high pedestrian risk, and the development and maintenance of pedestrian infrastructure.

Being Safe as a Pedestrian

Unfortunately, pedestrian accidents can occur even when the pedestrian is obeying all traffic laws. To lower your risk of being hit while a pedestrian, follow these simple tips:

  1. Avoid walking in areas without proper lighting, especially when walking at night.
  2. Wear bright clothing or a reflector’s vest if you know ahead of time that you will be walking in the dark.
  3. Always cross the streets using a designated crosswalk. Take the time to walk to a lighted intersection before crossing a busy street.
  4. Do not assume that traffic has seen you as you begin to cross the street. Confirm that the driver is making a full stop before proceeding across the street. You can wave or look at the driver while standing at the edge of the curb to increase your chances of catching their attention.

Wrongful Pedestrian Death

The death of a relative and loved one is hard enough to deal with on its own. It can be more difficult when paired with the negligence of another. This is why I have worked many years as a South Sacramento Wrongful Death Lawyer helping families receive compensation for their loss.

Pedestrian Struck by a Hit and Run Driver may still have Insurance

Even when the pedestrian is hurt or killed by a hit and run driver, as long as the pedestrian has uninsured motorist coverage on her own car or someone in her household has such insurance, she is normally covered by that uninsured motorist insurance policy. Call an experienced lawyer for more information.
