Car Accident Seriously Injures Empire Woman
I’m Ed Smith, a Modesto car accident lawyer. A stolen vehicle pursuit was underway by authorities in Merced on the night of Wednesday, January 10, 2018. The pursuit continued into Modesto where it eventually ended due to a collision with a passenger vehicle. The driver of that vehicle, unfortunately, suffered major injuries as a result.
What Happened?
An Empire man was reportedly fleeing from authorities in a stolen 1998 Acura Integra. The pursuit, which began in Merced, continued into Modesto and was discontinued by authorities due to the suspect’s reckless driving behaviors. The Acura continued northbound along Santa Fe Avenue in the vicinity of Yosemite Boulevard. At the same time, a Nissan Murano driven by a 21-year-old Empire woman was traveling southbound along Santa Fe Avenue and was attempting to turn left into a private residence driveway. Due to the unsafe speed of the stolen Acura, the vehicle collided head-on with the Nissan. The impact of the collision propelled the Acura into the air and came to a rest along its left side, causing the suspect driver to be pinned inside.
Nature of Injuries
Emergency crews were required at the scene to provide passenger extrication efforts and render aid to those who suffered injuries. The driver of the stolen Acura was extricated out of the vehicle and transported to the Doctors Medical Center for treatment. The Nissan driver was taken to the Memorial Medical Center for treatment of major injuries. An update on their conditions have not yet been released by officials.
Accident Investigation
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) received a report of the stolen Acura Integra on January 5, 2018. The suspect driver of the stolen Acura was identified as David William Rodney Fannon. A sobriety test was reportedly conducted on Fannon during hospitalization, which later revealed that he was under the influence of drugs at the time of the collision. Fannon has been detained on suspicion of driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury. The suspect may face more charges as the investigation continues.
Stolen Vehicle Accidents and Auto Insurance
The city of Modesto has been experiencing an increase in stolen vehicle accidents. Most of the time, suspect drivers tend to exercise reckless driving behaviors while attempting to escape police. This may increase the risk of an auto accident for innocent people on the road. Insurance policies of stolen vehicles typically do not cover an auto accident that was not caused by their insured, leaving a victim clueless on how to obtain compensation for their losses. Such losses may be covered under Uninsured/Under-insured Motorist Protection (UM). UM Protection covers those who have experienced damages as a result of the following:
