Stolen Car Crashes into Family Near Merced
I’m Ed Smith, a Merced accident lawyer. A man driving a stolen vehicle led police on a chase in downtown Merced on the morning of Tuesday, September 26, 2017. A family in a separate car was struck by the stolen vehicle. Unfortunately, multiple parties suffered injuries from this incident.
We extend our thoughts and prayers for a full recovery for the individuals injured in this tragic incident.
What Happened?
Amtrak Police noticed a 1997 Honda Civic maneuvering around the railroad-crossing lights along Canal Street at approximately 8:00 am. Officers attempted to stop the motorist, but the vehicle sped away. The Honda was traveling eastbound along Main Street in the vicinity of K Street. At the same time, an Acura sedan carrying a family was traveling southbound along K Street. The Honda allegedly ran a red signal light at K Street and collided with the oncoming Acura, resulting in a serious crash. The impact propelled the Honda into the front door of an area restaurant and the Acura into a traffic pole. The accident caused both vehicles to sustain major body damage.
Was Anybody Injured?
The driver of the suspected stolen Honda suffered a broken leg. The family riding in the Acura suffered unspecified injuries resulting from the car accident. They were transported to a local hospital as a precaution.
Accidents Involving Stolen Vehicles
Stolen vehicle accidents are difficult situations to handle. In typical car accident cases, the insurance policy of the at-fault party is responsible for all damages caused to other parties. However, there is usually no insurance available from stolen vehicles causing accidents. The likelihood of a thief having their own car insurance policy to compensate affected parties is slim to none. That is why it is important to have collision coverage and Uninsured/Under-insured Motorist Protection (UM).
Insurance for Stolen Vehicle Accidents
Collision coverage is useful to have, especially considering the increase in hit-and-run and stolen vehicle accidents in the state. Although you may have to pay the costs of your deductible, it is better to pay a few hundred dollars instead of a few thousand dollars for vehicle repairs. If you do not have this coverage on your insurance policy, unfortunately, you will be held liable for the repairs yourself.
UM protection is an optional coverage to add to your insurance policy. Although this coverage is not a requirement by California state law, it is better to be safe than sorry. This coverage is designed to cover policy holders affected by hit-and-run accidents or an accident with an uninsured/under-insured person. It is crucial to receive all necessary injury treatment prior to discussing settlement. Consult with an experienced Merced accident lawyer for more information.
