Subaru’s Top Selling Cars on Recall

Among the widespread recalls for vehicles in the news today, I was surprised to have found out about Subaru’s recall for an overheating issue that may lead to the vehicle catching on fire. Especially being that my sibling is an owner of one of the models identified in the recall.

What is the Problem?

The Subaru company has recalled more than 100,000 of its high in-demand models in the United States. The reason behind the issued recall is that the turbocharger air pump in the vehicle runs continuously which can propose a risk for the vehicle to overheat and possibly cause a fire. If the vehicle catches on fire, this can propose burn injuries and possibly death to occupants in the cabin.

What Models are on Recall?

The recall has been issued for the following vehicles:

  • 2007 to 2009 Outback and Legacy
  • 2008 to 2014 Impreza
  • 2009 to 2013 Forester

All of the vehicles and SUVs have engines that are turbocharged. For this reason, Subaru stated in government documents that a defect in the secondary air injection pump is susceptible to failure due to its controlled relay. If the vehicle overheats, it can cause the part to melt which can cause the vehicle to catch on fire.

Steps to Take if You Own One of the Vehicles Listed

If you are an owner of the identified vehicles from above, it is highly recommended that you contact your local Subaru dealer to schedule an appointment. Subaru will replace the auto part at no charge. However, Subaru has not set up a schedule yet for the initiation of the recall process. If you own a different type of vehicle, you may also search the safety issue recalls for your vehicle on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Keeping You Safe recall page here.
