Susanville Corrections Officer Dies in Shasta County Solo-Vehicle Accident

A Northern California man lost his life after being injured during a Shasta County solo-vehicle accident that occurred on Thursday, June 25, 2020. The decedent has since been identified as Richard Bianchi, a 53-year-old Correctional Officer at the High Desert State Prison in Susanville. Governor Gavin Newsom released a statement mourning the officer’s death on Sunday, June 28, offering his “deepest condolences” to Bianchi’s loved ones. Additionally, the cause of the accident is reportedly still being investigated by the Shasta area California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Crash Information

The collision happened on Highway 44 close to Old Station road around 50 miles to the east of the city of Redding. Bianchi had been driving from Susanville to Redding in order to work at a hospital where an inmate was being given medical care.

According to CHP reports, Bianchi was driving a 2009 Chevrolet sedan and heading west on the highway when his vehicle drifted to the right. For unknown reasons, Bianchi apparently lost control of the car and traveled off-road. After leaving the road, the car overturned and rolled down a steep embankment.

Response

When responders arrived at the scene, they found that Bianchi had been critically injured during the incident. Tragically, he was officially pronounced deceased on-site. Police indicated that no other individuals were injured and that the vehicle received extreme damage during the accident.

Investigation

As CHP continues to look into what could have caused this accident, no suspected collision factors have been mentioned so far. Crashes that only involve one vehicle can still be caused by multiple factors and many common solo-vehicle collision causes are things drivers aren’t able to control. Non-driver vehicle accident factors frequently include defective car parts or serious roadway issues.

Furthermore, conducting an investigation into a fatal accident can present a major challenge to police. Because they are unable to question the driver about what took place, it’s possible that critical evidence may go overlooked during an official investigation. Because of this, it’s important to have a trustworthy attorney to privately investigate the accident.

Rollovers and Fatal Injuries

Rollover accidents are much more dangerous than most types of crashes and are very likely to involve fatal or severe injuries. This is largely due to the fact that many vehicle roofs aren’t built to withstand a major impact, meaning that they may crumple during a rollover. If this happens, the material from the vehicle’s roof can intrude into the cabin, causing major injuries.

In these cases, the company responsible for manufacturing the car often shares a portion of liability for damages caused during the accident. However, it’s important to preserve the wrecked vehicle so that your attorney can determine whether or not the auto manufacturer can be held liable.
