Suspected DUI Crash Fatally Injures Lincoln High School Senior

A suspected drunk driving accident occurred near Merced on the afternoon of Friday, September 15, 2017. The crash, sadly, claimed the life of a high school student from Stockton.

We would like to extend our deepest thoughts and condolences to the loved ones of the young man that passed away in this devastating accident.

What Happened?

A high school senior student from Lincoln High School was on his way to Golden Valley High School in Merced to play a football game. The student was a passenger of a white BMW. The BMW was traveling southbound along Pacific Avenue while attempting to turn into the Weberstown Mall at approximately 2:20 pm. A 31-year-old Stockton man was driving his black Infiniti northbound along Pacific Avenue and struck the BMW. The impact propelled the BMW into a gray Toyota sedan leaving the mall.

Was Anybody Injured?

The driver of the white BMW suffered traumatic injuries resulting from the accident and was transported to an area hospital. The passenger of the BMW, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

What Caused the Accident?

The cause of the accident has not yet been released due to ongoing investigation. A Traffic Collision Report is usually processed within one to two weeks from the date of the accident. However, investigators soon found out that drunk driving played a role in the collision. Officials conducted sobriety tests on the driver of the black Infiniti. The tests determined that the motorist, a 31-year-old man, was allegedly under the influence of alcohol. He was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on charges of felony DUI and his bond has been set at $1 million dollars. He may face more charges as the investigation continues.

DUI Offender Plead Guilty to Prior Speeding Charge

Court records indicated that Anthony Calderon faced a speeding charge on June 1, 2017. Calderon was driving his black Infiniti southbound along Highway 99 in the vicinity of Cherokee Road in Stockton at about 4:45 am. A California Highway Patrol (CHP) deputy stopped Calderon for speeding. The speeding citation stated that the Infiniti was traveling approximately 101 mph in a 65 mph zone. He plead guilty to this offense on August 28, 2017, only 18 days before the tragic accident that claimed the life of the Lincoln High School student.

Drunk Driving Accidents

Accidents involving drunk drivers continue to take place throughout the State of California. A 2016 Stockton Accident Statistic Report revealed that approximately 95 of 2,453 accidents were caused by DUI. Drunk driving accidents are responsible for nearly a third of all traffic fatalities in the nation alone. Many of these impaired motorists tend to be repeat offenders. Any party that causes a car accident while driving under the influence of alcohol is deemed negligent. Drivers convicted of DUI in an accident are held liable to pay for all damages caused to all parties. If you or a loved one has been injured in an accident caused by an impaired driver, it is important to contact an experienced Stockton personal injury lawyer. An attorney with years of experience can obtain the restitution an injured party needs to cover for property damages, emotional harm and medical costs.
