Suspected DUI Crash Kills Roseville Woman

I’m Ed Smith, a Roseville Car Accident Lawyer. A Roseville woman died Saturday in a suspected DUI car accident near Grass Valley. My deepest condolences go out to the friends and family of the woman who tragically lost her life in the solo vehicle crash.

What Happened?

The as of yet unidentified 59-year-old Roseville woman killed in the Saturday crash was traveling in the passenger seat of a Geo Metro driven by a man from Newcastle. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the pair were headed west on Alta Sierra Drive in Grass Valley when the automobile left the roadway after allegedly speeding into a curve. The vehicle became airborne briefly and landed in a four-foot irrigation channel, partially ejecting the female passenger. The car then rolled down the embankment of the drainage ditch crushing the woman as she was trapped hanging out of the driver’s side window.

Fatal Injuries

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering catastrophic injuries as a result of the collision. Emergency responders attempted unsuccessfully to administer CPR, but the nature and extent of her injuries was too extreme for resuscitation. The driver of the vehicle suffered minor injuries and was able to escape the wrecked car through its rear hatch. CHP determined that alcohol was a factor in the incident and arrested the driver. He has since been released from the Nevada County Jail.

Seat Belts

The CHP reports that neither the passenger nor the driver were wearing safety restraints at the time of the crash. Seat belts are important safety devices designed to ensure that the occupant of a vehicle stays restrained even in the event of a collision. In crashes like this one where a passenger is ejected from the vehicle, using a seatbelt might have saved the deceased person’s life. Seat belts have been found to reduce accident deaths by 45% and injuries by 50% for front seat occupants. Seat belts have also been shown to significantly reduce the risk of ejection. Please remember to buckle up- seat belts save lives.
