I’m Ed Smith, a Marysville-Yuba City wrongful death lawyer. Two men from Yuba City lost their lives in an accident that authorities suspect was caused by a driver under the influence of alcohol.
Accident Details
Reports issued by California Highway Patrol (CHP) indicate that the collision occurred on Sunday, November 19, 2017, on Highway 70 close to Palermo Road. Eyewitnesses reported that Marc Edward Andrews, a 47-year-old resident of Oroville, had been driving on Palermo Road when he neglected to stop or even slow for a stop sign.
After the man ran the stop sign, his vehicle entered the highway and subsequently collided with the broadside of a 2001 Toyota Echo occupied by two men from Yuba City.
Response and Injuries
According to a CHP reported filed at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, responders found that the two occupants of the Toyota received fatal trauma during the collision. The driver of the errant vehicle was found with injuries that medical officials determined to be of moderate severity and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The Butte County Sheriff’s Office released the identities of the deceased individuals on the morning of Monday, November 20, 2017. The two were identified as 18-year-old Ryan Jensen and 20-year-old Mason Oakes.

DUI
Andrews was arrested for suspected DUI before he was taken to the hospital. According to records from the Butte County Superior Court, Andrews has two prior DUI convictions. Both were misdemeanors and occurred in 2016 and 2014.
Additionally, CHP reported that they don’t believe distracted driving to have been a factor in the collision, but are still investigating the issue.
A Dangerous Highway
This stretch of highway is known for its numerous and tragic accidents. Only a few months ago, an area man purchased a billboard on the side of Highway 70 with a message reminding motorists that they need to slow down. The sign he held read “Blood Alley – Slow Down.”
Also, a press conference was planned for Monday at which officials announced their plans to increase efforts to enforce safe driving on this stretch of highway. The press conference had to be delayed in order to update the highway death count before the media event took place.

CHP has reported that Sunday’s collision is still under investigation and they have asked that anybody with pertinent info contact the non-emergency number (530) 538-2700.
