Sutter County Rollover Accident
On Thursday, February 27, 2020, California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported a Sutter County rollover accident that caused significant injuries. The crash took place in a rural area of Sutter County and involved only one vehicle. The number of people injured during the crash has not been reported. However, at least one person suffered major injuries as a result of the accident.
Crash Details
The collision happened on State Route 70 near the intersection of Ramirez road outside of Tony’s fruit stand between Yuba City and Oroville. According to CHP traffic logs, a Chevy Tahoe heading south on the highway left the roadway and collided with a tree and power pole, causing the car to overturn multiple times. The car eventually came to a rest on its roof in a nearby orchard.
At the time of reporting, police were still conducting preliminary investigations into possible causal factors involved in the accident. Additionally, traffic reports indicated that highway traffic was not obstructed by accident response.
Rollover Accidents and Injuries
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released statistics that show that accidents involving rollovers are especially dangerous. According to NHTSA data, vehicles overturn in only around two percent of all US car accidents. However, nearly ten percent of US crashes that result in fatal injuries are rollover collisions. This disparity shows that rollover accidents are more likely to involve fatal trauma than most other collisions.
There are a few different reasons that rollovers can be so dangerous. For instance, people are often ejected through vehicle windows during rollovers, especially if their seatbelt malfunctions. Additionally, rollovers need to have enough force to cause the vehicle to overturn.
Roof Crush Injuries
However, one of the key reasons that these auto accidents are so dangerous is because vehicle roofs often aren’t able to withstand a serious impact. With vehicles that are built with weak materials or that are poorly designed, the roof is liable to crush under the pressure of a rollover crash, leaving occupants with serious injuries that could have otherwise been avoided. These injuries are called “roof crush injuries.”
The companies that manufacture these vehicles are expected to ensure that their products are safe. In many cases, this means that they can be held liable if the roof of a vehicle isn’t strong enough to protect drivers and/or passengers during a rollover crash. By filing personal injury claims against auto product manufacturers, crash survivors are often able to obtain compensation for their medical bills as well as damages like lost income, personal suffering, and more.
