In a recent post, we encouraged motorists not to Snapchat and Drive because of the devastating injuries and fatalities we encounter in our law practice due to distracted driving collisions. Let me tell you, nothing is quite as sobering as the words of regret and sorrow coming from a person who has suffered a serious bodily injury while using their cell phone while driving. Now imagine that same person learning they are responsible for the wrongful death of their passenger or another motorist on the roadway.
Invincible Young People and Social Media
Most young people think they are invincible. While many teens think using Snapchat while driving is harmless (all their friends do it), nothing could be further from the truth. Take the time to talk to any young drivers in your life and let them know that using Snapchat is a form of distracted driving. Share the teen crash statistics with them. Recent statistics indicate that distracted driving is the leading cause of car crashes in the United States.

According to statistics, these traffic collisions are responsible for more than 431,000 motor vehicle accident injuries yearly. In particular, teen drivers are at risk of collisions while driving distracted. About 10 percent of all motorists who get into distracted driving crashes are between 15 and 19 years old.
Looking for Some Teen Drivers to Take a Stand
Sadly, teen drivers risk their own lives and the lives of their passengers and other motorists on the road. DoSometing.org is a website that advocates for teen drivers to take a stand and make positive steps to affect social change. They encourage young drivers to become role models by speaking out to eliminate poor driving behavior like Snapchat while driving. The website also offers some sobering (and heartbreaking) facts about teen car wrecks and the dangers distraction poses:
- 16-year-old drivers have the highest number of auto accidents;
- Teen car crashes are responsible for one-third of all teen deaths in the United States;
- About 50 percent of all teen drivers admit to using their cellphone while driving;
- Less than 50 percent of all teens riding as passengers in a car operated by another teen driver said they would speak up if that person was driving recklessly.
