UC Merced Chief Injured in Car Accident
Dorothy Leland, a Chancellor for the Merced University of California, was involved in a car accident on the evening of Tuesday, September 20, 2016.
What Happened?
Sixty-year-old Dorothy Leland drove southbound on Lake Road in Merced at approximately 6:23 p.m. Leland was traveling in her Lexus RX 450 when a gray Toyota Corolla struck her vehicle.
What Types of Injuries?
The types of injuries are still unknown. However, Officer Moises Onsurez from the California Highway Patrol said nobody was severely injured.
Who Caused the Accident?
Investigators reported that the motorist of the gray Toyota Corolla, a 19-year-old woman, was traveling west on Scholars Lane. She failed to yield to Leland’s vehicle at the intersection of Scholars Lane and Lake Road. For this reason, the other motorist caused right front end damage to her Corolla and left front end damage to Leland’s Lexus. Officers ruled out the factors of drugs and alcohol in the investigation. The accident still remains under investigation.

Dorothy Leland is the Chancellor at UC Merced. Leland was appointed to the position of the university’s third Chancellor on July 1, 2011. Leland has over 30 years of experience working in higher education for students. Leland has worked at Purdue University and Florida Atlantic University, two of the nation’s leading universities for public research.
