Teenager Killed in Vallejo Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Vallejo truck accident lawyer. An accident in Napa County took the life of a teenager on November 9 in a crash with a semi trailer. I would like to take this opportunity to offer my sympathy to the family of this young man in this time of grief.

The Accident Details

The accident happened shortly after 9:00 in the morning when the driver of a Nissan, heading northbound on State Route 29 in the vicinity of American Canyon, ran through a traffic signal at the corner of Highway 29 and South Kelly Road. According to a representative of the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a Kenworth semi trailer was crossing the highway with a green traffic signal. The Nissan driver, identified as Javier Sanchez-Mota, was rushed to a Napa medical facility where he was pronounced dead at approximately 1:00 p.m., a sheriff’s spokesperson said.

Injuries in the Accident

Of the two occupants in the 2006 Nissan, a female passenger, also 18-years old, suffered moderate injuries. The truck driver, 34, a resident of Isleton, had minor injuries.

Investigation

There is no word at the time of this report as to why the accident happened or if alcohol or drugs were involved. According to police, both people in the Nissan had seat restraints on.

Intersection Accident

Based on the Fatality Analysis Reporting System, about 40 percent of all crashes or 2,307,000 out of the over five million annual crashes in the United States happen at intersections. Of these, 7,412 involved fatalities. The biggest pre-crash events were where one of the motor vehicles was making a left turn at an intersection. The second was when one of the two vehicles was actively crossing the intersection. Although meant to guide traffic, traffic signal regulated roads were the site of 52.5 percent of intersection accidents. Thirty-one percent of the accidents occurred at an intersection with a stop sign.

Characteristics of Drivers

The majority of drivers involved in an intersection accident were female. The highest percentage of crashes at intersections were among drivers in the 18 to 20 year-old group. About 96 percent of all crashes occurred due to driver error. Of these, 52 percent were due to inattention or distraction, decision errors at 29.2 percent such as speeding, misjudging speed of others or an illegal maneuver. Less than 1 percent were due to medical emergencies at 0.8 percent and slightly less than that were due to overcompensation.

Weather Conditions

Weather was not a factor in 78.6 percent, which happened under clear conditions. About 16 percent of the total number occurred on cloudy days with 6.2 percent happening in the rain.

Injuries in Intersection Accidents

Depending on the severity of a crash and the size of vehicles, there are a wide range of injuries. Many intersection accidents involve what is known as a T-Bone crash where one vehicle side-impacts another. This is particularly dangerous since the door area provides less protection than other areas such as the front and rear of a vehicle, which are constructed to protect the occupants. Traumatic brain injury from such crashes is common as is trauma to the chest and abdomen. Major fractures such as those to the upper leg or femur bone and the pelvis are often seen with side-impact crashes.
