Tendon Rupture in a Car Accident

Car accidents are a serious problem in the United States and are one of the leading causes of death across all age groups. When people make the decision to drive, they take on the risk that an auto accident could happen at any time. There are many reasons why car wrecks might occur and just as many injuries can happen as a result. Some of the statistics on collisions that have been published by the Association for Safe International Road Travel include:
  • The majority of people who are killed in vehicular accidents are between the ages of 15 and 44.
  • More than 1.25 million people are killed in car wrecks every year across the world.
  • For every one person that is killed in a car accident, there is an additional 20-30 people who are injured.
These statistics are startling. Because of this, it is a good idea to look at injuries that can occur to the tendons which people may suffer in a car crash.

Injuries to the Tendons in Motor Vehicle Accidents

The body depends on the intricate connections of muscles, tendons, and ligaments to generate significant motor function. The tendons are the part of the muscles that connect to the bones. When people contracts their muscles, their tendons shorten and pull on the bones. This generates movement. Like other body parts, they can become injured in a car accident and could even rupture altogether. There are many ways that the tendons could break, but the most common is an over-extension or flexion of the muscles due to the pinning of a body part or through a penetrating injury from metal or glass that penetrates the skin. This can lead to a noticeable bulge underneath the skin, the loss of motor function, acute pain, and a visible bruise.

Treatment of a Ruptured Tendon

Those who have ruptured a tendon would need to see a doctor immediately. This is a serious injury that will require surgery to repair. First, the doctor will evaluate for other injuries that the person may have sustained in an accident, like a bone fracture. After this, an imaging scan, like an MRI, will be completed to look for other injuries that may have been missed and to assess the tendon injury, once this is done, the majority of people will need surgery to rejoin the tendon to the bone. The repair will need time to heal, and the person will require physical therapy to restore strength and motor function to the injured limb. Depending on the severity of the tendon rupture, it could be months before someone returns to his or her baseline.
