Thai Tourist Killed in Accident near South Lake Tahoe

A woman from Thailand was killed in a collision on Monday, June 26, at 4:30 p.m. at Cave Rock along Highway 50.

How was the Thai Tourist Killed?

A 40-year-old Carson City resident was traveling eastbound on Highway 50 toward Glenbrook on Monday evening. The woman was driving a black Volkswagen Passat around a bend when she departed her lane and crossed over into oncoming traffic. A Chrysler minivan with six occupants was headed west and could not get out of the way of the Passat before the two vehicles collided head-on. The Volkswagen struck the front corner of the minivan’s passenger side. The passenger’s seat was occupied by Sranthon Bunnag, a 52-year-old woman visiting South Lake Tahoe from Thailand. The impact of the collision caused Bunnag to sustain fatal injuries.

We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the woman who passed away in this tragedy.

Others Injured

The other passengers and driver of the minivan were transported to a hospital in South Lake Tahoe, most likely Barton Memorial Hospital. Their injuries, although serious, were not life-threatening. The driver of the Volkswagen was taken to a hospital in Reno to be treated for her injuries. Nevada Highway Patrol officers will await her recovery and then book her into the Douglas County Jail. It was determined that she was driving under the influence and will plausibly be charged with DUI, vehicular manslaughter, and other crimes.

Highway 50 was closed down to one lane as Trooper Dan Gordon, along with other NHP officers, investigated and cleared the scene. The cars were removed, and both lanes reopened by 10 p.m. that evening.

Using a Local Lawyer

If you or a loved one are in an accident or injured while out of state or visiting another country, it is wise to use a local law firm to file a claim in the vicinity where the accident took place. In the United States, you must file that claim in the same state where the incident occurred. Using a local lawyer has many benefits to help you recoup your losses.

  1. A local attorney will be licensed to practice law in the state where the accident happened. If you hire a lawyer from your home state or country, there may be complications during court or even trying to file a claim.
  2. Lawyers who practice locally will have experience with the local courts, judges, procedures, and rules.
  3. Local Advocates are familiar with insurance companies and police forces. This will allow for smoother access to reports and evidence, and insurers will know the reputation of the lawyers.
  4. Local law firms are close at hand if complications arise during the case. There is no need to make travel arrangements for lawyers back and forth.
