I’m Ed Smith, a Thousand Oaks car accident lawyer. A car crash occurred between two vehicles in the city of Thousand Oaks on May 17. Although a report stated that an ambulance arrived at the scene of the accident, there is no word as of the time of this report on injuries suffered or their severity. My sympathy and heartfelt wishes for a speedy recovery goes to the people involved and their families.
What Happened
A report filed by the California Highway Patrol stated that the incident occurred just after noon on one of the ramps that connect U.S. Highway 101 with Hampshire Road. The vehicles involved were described as a Honda Ridgeline pickup and a Volkswagen sedan. The accident was severe enough that tow trucks were needed to help clear the scene. The accident is being investigated by the CHP as to the cause.
Problems With On-and Off-Ramps
The National Center for Biotechnology Information notes that about 36 percent of all accidents occurred on on-ramps. One of the main issues is that traffic entering the ramp may have to merge with other vehicles. Obeying the rules of the road concerning merging traffic is essential to prevent accidents.
California Vehicle Code Section 21804 states that traffic entering a highway must merge with existing traffic, yielding to oncoming traffic until a safe entrance is possible. When talking about access roads or on- and off-ramps, a California Highway Patrol representative notes that once you are on a ramp, you are under the same requirements as other highway drivers.
Other problems on on-and off-ramps include the need to adjust speed once on the ramp. Going from a higher speed to a low one can cause accidents if drivers are not alert. Taking the time to note the ramp speed and making sure there is ample room to slow down is important. Speeding along on ramps is negligent. The use of alcohol is a common factor in such accidents.
Rear-End Accidents
Rear-end accidents are common as well as side-swipe and run-off-the-road accidents on ramps and access roads. Off-ramps are associated with run-off-the-road accidents more frequently. Alternately, rear-end and sideswipe accidents are more common with on-ramps. Rear end accidents occur most on access roads.
