Crash Near Crescent City Hospitalizes Three
On Monday, February 3, 2020, Del Norte California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers reported that three people were sent to the hospital after a major crash near Crescent City. The injured individuals included a 46-year-old man from Oregon as well as two women from Crescent City, aged 25 and 21 years old. According to police, all three individuals were severely injured during the accident. Updates on their conditions remain unavailable.
Crash Details
CHP reported that the accident happened on Highway 199 at around 8:30 p.m. near the community of Gasquet. The Oregon man was driving a 2015 Honda northbound on the highway and had just passed Siskiyou Fork Road while the 25-year-old woman was driving her 1997 Toyota south in the same area. Police indicated that the Honda crossed over the highway median and entered southbound lanes before colliding head-on with the other vehicle.
Emergency personnel were sent to the scene directly after CHP was notified. According to reports, Gasquet Fire, Del Norte Ambulance, American Medical Response, Caltrans, and the Crescent City Fire Protection District all participated in accident response. Officials arriving at the scene found that one individual was trapped inside of their wrecked vehicle. Firefighters reportedly extricated the trapped survivor using the jaws of life. All three were taken to hospitals by ground ambulance.
Investigation
CHP has reported that they have officers currently investigating what may have caused this crash. However, police say they do not yet know why the Honda traveled over the double yellow lines. CHP has indicated that neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected as accident factors.
In many cases, accidents like this one happen because something that drivers can’t control. For example, a steering system may malfunction and cause a driver to veer suddenly, or a large pothole may force a vehicle into a dangerous situation.
Head-On Accidents
Head-on collisions are one of the most dangerous kinds of crashes. Because both vehicles transfer their full momentum into the impact, vehicles can sustain extremely high amounts of force during these accidents. While cars are typically designed to sustain front-end damage, these crashes are still very dangerous and are highly liable to cause severe injuries.
Some of the more common injuries suffered during head-on crashes include:
- Cervical sprains
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Leg fractures
- Chest trauma
- Spinal cord injuries
All of these injuries can be life-changing, and many crash survivors need to undergo extensive treatment and therapy in order to recover. Not only is the recovery process difficult, but it can also be extremely expensive, leaving survivors and their families in a very tough situation.
