Drowsy Driving and Car Accidents
Drowsy driving is a serious problem on California roads today. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are various factors attributable to drowsy driving other than insufficient rest. These may include the use of prescription or over-the-counter medications, insomnia, and extended shifts at work. Other factors of drowsy driving may include undiagnosed sleep disorders or alcohol consumption.

How to Avoid Drowsy Driving
The most effective measure in preventing drowsy driving is to get a good night’s rest on a regular basis. It is essential to receive 7-8 hours of sleep each night to limit your risk of fatigue. This is also particularly critical for those taking a long family road trip since lack of sleep may contribute to a car accident down the road, putting families and others at risk. Following are some useful ways of avoiding drowsy driving:
- Avoid consuming alcohol before operating a motor vehicle at all costs.
- Be aware of any signs of drowsiness such as striking a rumble strip or drifting across roadway lines when driving alone.
- Try to avoid driving after midnight or during the late afternoon as these times are considered prime periods for sleepy drivers.
- When taking medications with drowsiness listed as a side effect, use rideshare companies such as Uber or Lyft or public transportation whenever possible.
