Three Teens Injured in Ventura Traffic Light Pileup Crash

I’m Ed Smith, a Ventura car accident lawyer. A traffic light pileup crash in El Rio on June 15 injured three seniors from Rio Mesa High School. The seniors were scheduled to attend their graduation ceremony the following day. Parents of the injured teens received the diplomas in their absence.

What Happened

The accident occurred just after 4:00 in the morning near Vineyard Avenue/Route 232 and Central Avenue, according to a representative of the California Highway Patrol. One vehicle, which carried a driver and two passengers, was waiting at a traffic light. The Ford Mustang carrying the teens was stopped behind it. This is when a Hyundai Elantra crashed into the Mustang, pushing it into the car in front. The teens had been driving home following festivities for Grad Night that had been held at Disneyland.

Accident Injuries

According to an official with the fire department in Ventura County, one person had be removed from the Mustang, and two of the victims of the crash were critically injured. Although all three teens in the Mustang were reported as injured, there is no word at this time about the injuries to the third teen. The occupants of the first vehicle were uninjured in the accident, as was the man in the Elantra who reportedly caused the crash.

Driver Faces Felony Charges

The man who caused the crash, a 27-year-old resident of Oxnard, was arrested at the scene on the suspicion of driving drunk and DUI with serious bodily harm. Both charges are felonies. The CHP reported that his blood alcohol level at the time of the accident was a minimum of 0.08 percent. He was booked into the jail in Ventura County and released the next day on bail of $50,000. The man is scheduled to go to court for a preliminary hearing on June 30.

Drunk Drivers in California

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that there were 10,327 people killed from 2003 to 2012 by drunk drivers in California. To be charged as a drunk driver, an adult driver must exhibit a blood alcohol (BAC) level of 0.08 percent or higher. There is zero tolerance for anyone under the age of 21 to exhibit any alcohol in their system.
