Three-Vehicle Collision in Oakley Injures Three
Oakley police are investigating a three-car accident that caused three people to be hospitalized. It was shortly after 3:45 p.m. on Sunday, January 20, when firefighters from the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD) were dispatched to an accident in Oakley. The collision occurred at the intersection of O’Hara Avenue and Laurel Road. According to Jake Gonzalez, ECCFPD battalion chief, firefighters arrived to discover one car flipped upside-down with the driver stuck inside. In the time that firefighters were trying to remove the trapped driver, paramedics were simultaneously treating two other injured drivers who suffered minor injuries.
The trapped driver was rescued and needed medical care. A CalStar medical helicopter was dispatched to Laurel Elementary School to transfer the man to John Muir Center in Walnut Creek. His injuries ranged from moderate to major. The other injured drivers also sought out local medical centers, but their specific locations were not immediately available. All cars sustained moderate to heavy damage from the collision. The calculated estimate of loss has not been revealed.
Common Car Accident Causes in California
There are hundreds of thousands of motor vehicle accidents in California each year. It is unfortunate to admit that the majority of these accidents occur due to negligent and/or reckless driver behavior. It is crucial for drivers to recognize and stray from these bad habits, which significantly increase the likelihood of a traffic accident.
- Speeding – Reports from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety prove that many accidents arise from speeding. As your driving speed increases, your control over your car and your reaction time decrease. Speed-related crashes also have high rates of fatal outcomes, due to the massive rate of energy that is released upon impact.
- Impaired Driving – Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol causes numerous auto accidents annually. In recent years, alcohol-related crashes have constituted over 25 percent of accident fatalities in California. In 2013, nearly one of three drivers killed in car accidents in California had been under the influence of prescribed or illegal drugs.
- Distracted Driving – Inattentive driving is another contributing factor to a wide number of collisions in California. The Office of Traffic Safety holds statistics that say roughly 61 percent of California drivers in 2014 had reported being in an accident or close call with another driver who was on the phone.
